ALPHARETTA, Ga. Authorities worked Saturday to put together why a suspect shot an officer five times during a traffic stop, hitting a innocent bystander and started a police shootout that ended in his death.
A spokesman for the police said Alpharetta police officer David Freeman and the wounded woman, were both in stable condition at the hospital Saturday.
The suspect Curtis Hicks, 52 was being pulled over for a tag violation Friday evening when he pulled out a gun and opened fired. Officer Freeman was shot in the lower abdomen, shoulder and his leg while another bullet grazed his back.
While calling for help Freeman managed to return fire. Hicks then fled in his truck into the neighboring city of Roswell while shooting at pursuing patrol cars. Bullets hit at least four police cars but no other police officers were injured.
The bystander, whose name was not released was hit by a bullet in the hip as she drove her truck.
The pursuit ended as Hicks crashed his vehicle, got out of his truck and continued to shoot at police. Police Officers returned fire and killed Hicks.
Police were still trying to figure out a motive. "The suspect was very determined, for whatever reason to evade capture," a spokesman said.
A police spokesman said Freeman was scheduled to undergo surgery for his wounds but was expected to recover fully.
