A man shot and killed his common-law wife in front of seven children before turning the gun on himself in Panorama City, Los Angeles, Friday night.
Los Angeles police responded to the scene of the apparent murder-suicide in 8700 block of Tobias Street in Panorama City.
The incident occurred inside an apartment in the 8700 block of Tobias Street just before 10 p.m.
Seven children, ages 1 to 19, were all inside the apartment at the time of the shooting incident, Los Angeles Police Lt. Paul Vernon said. None of the children nor the boyfriend were injured. "The couple had one of the children in common, a 10-year-old son", Vernon said.
The boyfriend of one of the daughter's was there when the first shots were fired.
Police say the boyfriend managed to wrestle the suspect out of the apartment. That's when the man turned the gun on himself.
The 21-year-old likely stopped the shooter from killing more people. "Tragic as this is, it could have been so much worse," Lt. Vernon said. "It’s lucky no one else was killed or wounded in that crowded apartment, either on purpose or by accident, thanks in part to the boyfriend."
Police said the incident began after the suspect had at least five beers and then got into an argument with his wife.
The husband then called a buddy and told him that he was going to kill himself. The friend was on the way to apartment when the suspect informed him that he was going to also kill his wife.
When the friend arrived, he told police he heard yelling inside the apartment and then gun shots.
Police found a sawed-off shotgun next to the husband’s body, Vernon said.
The investigation is still ongoing. Police have not released the identity of the victim nor the suspect.
We’ll have more details when they become available.
