On Friday, narcotics investigators were working to remove thousands of marijuana plants that were growing in a wilderness park in Orange County close to Laguna Beach.
The plants were spotted growing in a public park surrounded by a private high school and upscale homes, investigators said.
Authorities estimate 2,500 to 4,000 plants were growing in the Muddy Canyon area of the Laguna Wilderness Park, just outside of Newport Beach city limits.
"A lot of these were very mature,†Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock said. “So these plants were down there for some time", he added.
The plants were first discovered by OC Parks personnel “a few weeks back,†who then called the Sheriff’s Department, Hallock said.
“To find a grove of this size, of this magnitude, in an area so close to a really nice residential area, is quite unique,†said Lt. Jeff Hallock.

The Sheriff's department watched the location for a couple of weeks after the discovery. They were waiting for the pot farmers to return to the field. When the growers never showed up, they decided to pull out the crops.
Neighbors were stunned by the revelation. “Did someone really think they were going to get away with this, in this area, and so visible?†said resident Vivian Rice.
Hallock said they are still searching for the suspects. Authorities estimate the marijuana “grove†is around $5 million in illegal crops.

Most criminals are very intelligent; they would accomplish so much if they used their potential to do good. The police did a great job of getting rid of the marijuana; those responsible for planting it will make a mistake soon. They cannot escape the long arm of the law unless they mend their ways.
