ESCANABA, Mich. Four years a 15 year old boy was kept captive inside a house in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The boy, tortured and abused rarely left the room that was made from tarps, police said on Thursday.
Police arrested the teen's mother and her boyfriend last week. Both suspects are in the Delta County jail. Authorities have charged both with torture, child abuse and criminal sexual conduct, Escanaba police Capt. Jamie Segorski said.
"Neighbors were surprised there was a child in the house. They never saw toys or bikes. It was shocking to them," Segorski told reporters.
"There was a large room, like an attic, and a smaller room using tarps that were stapled to the walls and floor," he said. "The only source of heat was a space heater. He was allowed on the stairs to eat."
A relative who hadn’t seen the boy for a long time asked the police to help locate the boy. Police found the boy last Friday.
School officials said the teen was not enrolled in Escanaba schools. The boy and his mother were not longtime residents. Capt. Jamie Segorski said.
When police arrived, "he was scared," Segorski said. "It was just a shock there were people other than the boyfriend and his mother at the residence."
A neighbor, John Douros, said it's frustrating to live real close to the home and didn’t notice there was anything going on.
"Every time I inquired, `How's your kid doing?' I was always told that he was downstate with his biological father," Douros told reporters.
Defense attorneys did not comment. A hearing is set for April 25th to see if there is probable cause to send the case to trial.
