A San Diego police officer was hospitalized with serious injuries after being intentionally struck by a burglary suspect driving the officer's cruiser.

The incident happened 10 p.m. Tuesday in the Barrio Logan neighborhood where police responded to a call of a home burglary in progress.

Authorities say while the officer was interviewing a possible witness, the suspect got into the patrol car. The suspect allegedly struck the police officer as he tried to make his getaway. With the officer on the hood of the car, another officer shot at the suspect. The officer fell off the hood, just before the suspect drove the vehicle into a telephone pole.

Police say the suspect got out of the police car and took off by foot. With the help of a police dog, authorities later found and arrested twenty-five-year-old William Frank Bogard. Bogard was transported to a hospital with a gunshot wound.

According to officials, the injured police officer is Jeffrey Swett, a 25-year veteran of the police department. He is recovering at UC San Diego Medical Center.
