After five days of searching for the missing 12-year-old Talaija Dorsey, police said they have recovered the body. Her body was discovered in tall, thick grass near a cane field off the highway 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
“It didn’t end up the way we was hoping,†Sheriff Willy Martin said at a conference. Sheriff Willy Martin said the body had been in the area for several days and looked badly decomposed. "It's a shame. A 12-year-old girl does not deserve this, an innocent child." Martin said.
Emma Dorsey, the mother of the little girl reported her missing around 7 a.m. Tuesday. She said a friend stopped by her house so they could go to summer camp together. Her mother went to get Talaija from her bedroom and that is when she noticed her child was gone.
Sheriff Martin said Dorsey’s fiancé, John D. Celestine, 43, is a suspect in the little girl's death.
Martin told reporters police had arrested Celestine on Wednesday after deputies discovered a pair of Talaija’s slippers in a minivan at the family’s home. Celestine was booked on obstruction of justice and a count of false communications.
“We’re still holding that person,†Martin said. “We’re hoping that we will find evidence at the scene that will help us.â€
Martin also said that police are still checking out other leads. They are interviewing people who may have information, including two people the Sheriff said “we have to rule out†as possibly being involved.
We are trying to determine where the two were at the time the girl disappeared, Martin said.
Martin told reporters he could no release any other information about the investigation. “The person that killed her knows exactly how it looks and he won’t be able to say he heard it on TV,†Martin said.
Martin said they expect to the know the cause of death after an autopsy early this week.
