Captain Robert David Melton was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon while responding to a reported drive-by shooting.

"Our blue-line got a little thinner yesterday with the loss of Captain Melton," said Kansas City Police Chief Terry Ziegler.

Ziegler said Captain Melton was responding to call that had been involved in a drive-by shooting just minutes before. When he spotted the vehicle, Captain Melton blocked the car in. And at that point, Chief Ziegler stated one of the suspects took out his gun and began shooting into Melton's patrol vehicle.

Other police officers on the scene provided aid to Melton as they transported him to the hospital, where he later died. Melton was wearing body armor at the time.

Two men are in custody. However, police did not release their names yet.

Captain Robert David Melton was 46 years old, and had been with the department for 17 years.
