Police say seven people, including three 15-year-olds, were charged in connection with a brutal attack on a Chicago Brown Line platform where one victim was cut in the head with a machete.
The incident began about 12:30 a.m. Monday when the suspects surrounded a 26-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy while they were waiting for the train to arrive.
One of the suspects allegedly demanded the two victims to flash their gang signs. The two victims said no, explaining to the group they don't belong in a gang.
That’s when authorities say Mario Elvira, 18, allegedly pulled out a machete and started waving. According to police, he struck the 26-year-old leaving deep lacerations to his neck and head.
Elvira continued to swing the machete until the train pulled up to the platform. The group of seven then ran off.
Police later caught up with all seven suspects that were involved in the attack.
Mario Elvira was charged with robbery, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and trespassing on CTA property. Kevin Ramirez, 19, Kevar Preston, 20, and Jean Salvatierra, 23, were charged with robbery, aggravated battery and trespassing. The three minors, two males and one female, will also face charges. Bond information was not immediately available.
The victim was transported Swedish Covenant Hospital and is listed in stable condition.
