San Francisco authorities say police fatally shot a suspect multiple times in the parking lot of the Mission District police station Sunday night. Officials say the suspect had entered a restricted area of the police station and refused to leave. They say the suspect displayed erratic behavior and allegedly drew what appeared to be a firearm. Police said it turned out to be a airsoft gun.
Three police sergeants were leaving the station around 5:20 p.m. when they saw the white male inside the parking lot that is clearly marked for police only, according to Police Chief Greg Suhr. The sergeants approached the suspect and told him the parking lot is restricted and is not open to the public. They asked him to leave.
They got in their patrol car, believing the the suspect was leaving the parking lot. But as they were leaving, the suspect remained in the parking lot. The officers became suspicious and got out of their vehicle.
As the officers were walking up to the suspect and started telling him again to leave, the suspect allegedly backed away while also reaching into his waistband and revealing the butt of a gun.
"He went to his waistband where there was the butt of a gun and drew the weapon," the chief said.
According to authorities, two sergeants fired in response, hitting the suspect with gunfire three times. The suspect was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he underwent surgery however later died.
"We don't know his motive or why he challenged the officers or approached them in the first place," said Officer Albie Esparza. "It was very erratic behavior by the suspect, very unusual."
Police Chief Greg Suhr said the suspect tried to interact with other officers earlier on Sunday. He approached them and "inquired as to what kind of weapons we carry, which the officers at the time found very curious."
Officials described the suspect as a 32-year-old white man, and his identity has not been released pending notification of kin.
