Sgt. Craig Hutchinson, 54, was shot at his home, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities say when Sgt. Craig Hutchinson got home after his shift, he radioed the police department around 1:25 a.m. telling them he spotted suspects running around his backyard.

Several minutes later when the officers arrived at the scene, they found his body close to a creek located in his backyard with a gunshot wound.

He was taken to the local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Several agencies are in the surround area are investigating.

Sergeant Craig Hutchinson had served with the TCSO for 32 years. He was scheduled to retire in two months. He is survived by his wife.
