Speed guns

I'm really interested to know how speed guns work. I often wonder how officers can target one specific car on a busy road. Do you have to have a steady hand and follow the car or is there technology that let's you 'lock-on' to passing cars?

I think that cops see a car speeding from a certain mile or miles away. They have to have the gun locked on the car for a certain amount of time so they can get a good read. I wouldn't say that it is automatic lock-on, but you have to lock-on to an extent.

Different guns work differently as you can have speed cameras right behind a bend in the road that would have prevented them from getting a lock on. Im not sure of the exact process the guns go through to get their readings, but I do know there are different types and some more more accurate at different distances.
