An unidentified gunman was killed and two officers were wounded during a gunfight in Trenton, New Jersey Thursday morning, authorities said.

The two officers were investigating the woman's claim that her boyfriend attacked her in the home about 2:30 a.m. Mercer County Prosecutor Joseph Bocchini Jr. said.

The Trenton Police Department detectives, Jim Letts and Edgar Rios were driving a woman to her Hobart Ave. house where she told police a man assaulted her. When the woman and two officers got out of the vehicle they said a man brandishing a gun exited from a parked car about 8:45 a.m., officials said.

The officers arrived just as the man was pulling out of the driveway. The woman said "that's him" just before he whipped out a revolver and opened fire, Bocchini said.

Police report there were more than a half-dozen shots fired during the gun battle.

"When you walk into a domestic violence situation, you never know what's going to happen," Bocchini told reporters. "It can just become crazy and out-of-control."

Rios, a 30-year veteran, was shot in the back and Letts, a 15-year veteran, was shot in the shoulder.

Letts underwent surgery and was expected to survive. Rios condition is still unknown. The gunman was killed.
