Trial For Lt. Brian Rice Begins Thursday

Lt. Brian Rice, the highest ranking Baltimore police officer charged in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray. Freddie Gray, 25, suffered a severe injury in the back of a police van, he died a week later.

The trial is scheduled to get under way Thursday morning. Lt. Brian Rice had opted for a bench trial during a pretrial motions hearing Tuesday.

Lt. Rice, 42, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, two counts of misconduct in office, and reckless endangerment.

Rice was hired by the Baltimore Police Department in 1997. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2011.
