Trooper Joel R. Davis was fatally shot on Sunday, July 9, 2017 while responding to a domestic dispute.

Authorities say Davis, 36, was killed as he approached the residence of an active U.S. Army soldier.

Davis was wearing a bulletproof vest. However, he was struck him on the side, where he was not protected by his bulletproof vest.

When a second trooper arrived to the scene, the suspect, Justin D. Walters, 32, who was standing in his driveway unarmed had surrendered. The body of his wife, Nichole Walters, was discovered in the driveway with multiple fatal gunshot wounds.

Trooper Davis was with the New York State Police for four years. Before that he had been with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
