Trying to write a novel, have a question

I'm working on my first novel, and it centers around a fairly young deputy in a small, rural sheriff's office. If a deputy were to be shot in an SO with say, fewer than 15 or so deputies with one dedicated detective, what other agencies might be expected to assist in the investigation?
