It is a reaction to a reaction. 40+ years ago police officers where universally respected, but then there started to become the new breed of criminal. Police officers started to get tougher, and they went too far the other way, now they treat everyone like a criminal. There is going to be a reaction by the normal law abiding citizens. Everntually things will start to swing back the other way naturally.

People have a tendency to over react, and everything is called a war now day. We have a war on obsesity, a war on soft drinks, a war on wars.

It really depends on public opinion, whenever a law officer acts out of line, it seems as if it gets way more media coverage than when they do go, alas - it seems as if the public wants to hold onto the notion that our authorities are turning on us, it's the classic story of authority-abuse, and it sells magazines.
