what is the difference between battery and assault?

Hi everyone. It's my first post here. I just wanted to know what is the difference between battery and assault?

Battery is when you actually hit a person and assault is the attempt to hit the person. However some of the unofficial titles of code sections in some states use these terms interchangeably.
