A female teacher who accepted a plea deal after being accused of having sex with a student has been sentenced to 90-180 months behind bars.
Sarah Raymo, 32, of Essexville, Michigan, was an English language arts intervention specialist at T.L. Handy Middle School.
Raymo, who is married, allegedly had sex with a male student which began when he was 13 years old and continued until he was 15.
Douglas Newcombe, the superintendent, said school officials became aware of the improper situation in January and immediately called law enforcement.
Raymo was arrested on January 14th and arraigned in Bay County District Court. She pleaded guilty in September.
The victim testified in a preliminary examination that he had sex with Raymo six to eight times at the school and in her Essexville home.
Raymo who didn't say anything while she was in court was seen shaking and frequently wiping away tears.
"As a teacher, you're placed in a position of trust over your students," said Bay County Chief Circuit Judge Kenneth W. Schmidt. "That trust was violated when you elected to freely and willingly have sex with one of your students, no matter what the circumstances were surrounding your acceptance of the fact that you were going to have sex with this young man."
In exchange for the guilty pleas, prosecutors agreed to eliminate four of the more serious charges against Raymo.
