High School Dean Shot Student Execution Style

I believe that teachers should be allowed to have guns at school if they want to and they are properly trained for those kinds of situations. This story doesn't change that. There are always going to be a few bad apples in the bunch. It is a shame that this man was an educator and a man of the...

    Reasonable Suspicion?

Depending on the situation cops can search based on "reasonable suspicion". They have to be really careful about using their "gut feeling" though because if they are wrong or they cross a legal line anything they find can be thrown out of court.

Police Can Legally Seize All Your Possessions

Twelve cannabis plants, seedlings, and $11,000 in cash makes it sound like he was selling. Law enforcement is automatically going to assume that was what was happening and then yes, they can absolutely seize everything you own including wiping out your bank accounts.

    Fearing Retribution

Agreed Joan! A county near us is an uproar right now because their police chief was arrested for something and instead of being sentenced like a normal citizen would be he was charged with a misdemeanor, given probation, and got to keep his job!

    Military Background

Yes, having a military background can definitely give you a leg up in the hiring process for law enforcement positions. Honestly, I hope that having a military background would give you a leg up to get any position. They gave their time and risked their lives for military service so they deserve...

    Fearing Retribution

You have always heard that it isn't what you know, but who you know right? Well, this is certainly true in the law enforcement sector, especially for people who are elected like sheriff's. People who donate money to the campaign to get them elected always feel as though they, their friends, and...

    How long is a shift?

In my area for beat cops and patrol officers it is all based on a 12 hour shift so you get three days on and three days off. However, if you are a detective or an investigator there are no set hours. You go in when you have to. Unfortunately for officers most crimes don't happen between the...

How long could you live without the Internet?

I could live for a very long time without it, but I would be miserable after about a day. I use the internet to work from home and to home-school my kids so lack of it would definitely make those things more difficult. I really enjoy using it for research and socializing too.

    Question About Academy Requirments

I think a lot of it would depend on how old you are now. Was this incident two years ago or five years ago? If they can see that you have stayed out of trouble since then and a few years have passed there are still many agencies that would be happy to have you.

    Photographing children doing crime

I am glad that you are making progress Ruby, and you are right it probably doesn't hurt that the culprits are students of an expensive school. The people running the school certainly wouldn't want it to get out that little hooligans attend classes there! ;)

Family members affecting chance to join police

As far as I know, and I have been through a lot of CJ classes, there is no truth to this. It is not an applicant's fault if their family members are less than law abiding citizens. In fact, sometimes the officers with family members who have been through the system make the most effective officers.

Retired Police Officer Murders Daughters, Self

I think this is related to the anti-cop sentiment going on around the country. There are even Facebook groups of people who say that they want to murder a police man as a result of Ferguson and other police involved shootings of citizens. Back to the topic of the thread that is a really sad...

    Crazy things cops do

I have never seen any cops do anything like this in my time. I am not saying that it doesn't happen, but I have never seen it. I think that some people just really enjoy bashing cops and if they see something even remotely questionable they take off with it and run.

Police union to state lawmakers: Don't mess with no-knock warrants

The thing is that even if they knock in most of these instances if the people inside are armed the cops can still get hurt. A violent offender is not going to think "okay the police are knocking at my door let me just sit here and wait with my hands up". I don't think that no knock warrants...

What Can We Do About Perverts?

I agree with the others about reporting it anyway, and here is why...sometimes people like this frequent the same neighborhoods over and over. If you report it then the police are aware of it and can patrol the area more frequently. Many times these same people will do this to innocent children...

Unruly well known neighbors & officers who advise against reports/charges?

Pandabear I am so sorry for what you are going through. We have a similar issue with our neighbors but we are homeowners and they are the renters. I call the cops when I have to, but for the most part I know that it is a waste of my time and that of the officers on duty. The people who live in...

How do police deal with stress on thier jobs ?

A lot of the law enforcement officers I know spend a lot of time in the gym and a lot of time trying to decompress with their families. I think it is very important for law enforcement personnel to learn healthy coping skills very early on.

What is the first thing that you do when you wake up?

First thing I do is make a beeline for the coffee pot and tell my kids good morning. Then I boot up the laptop, check my email and sip on my coffee while I plan out my day.

    Photographing children doing crime

Get closed circuit cameras and record what is happening on YOUR property. There is absolutely no law against recording what is happening on your property and that tape can later be turned over to the police or the school, personally I would go with police, if you want it to stop and not...

    Police Overtime

Generally when you see officers in uniform working events like concerts they are technically "off duty" and the event organizers are responsible for paying their salary. They do have to have prior departmental approval before they can take on a job that requires them to wear their uniform...
