Vitamins are garbage

Thank you for sharing this. I am agreement with you. Your post was very informative. I do not want to be some one who relies on pills. I think doctors are too quick to prescribe them. Some people think a pill is the answer to everything. We have to be careful about those pills we take because they have side effects.

My diet consist of mostly protein, animal fat, fresh raw vegetables, and very little fruits and vegetables. Yes, I have educated myself with what really is a healthy diet. Now, do I supplement myself with vitamins? The answer is, no lately.

I was taking vitamin c for awhile because it does kill cancer cells. My family has a history of cancer so in a bit of fear, I was taking large dosages of vitamin c for about a year.

Vitamin supplements are usually used when you are not able to get the proper nutrition in your meals. There is proof that vitamin supplement can be very useful for most. You can buy them to be sure you get the proper amount in your body per day.

If you eat your two serving of fruits and vegetables every day you should be okay. You'll have all the vitamins you need. Problem is that most people live such hectic lives, they can't keep up with that. So, a few small tablets are easier to manage. Six of one,or half dozen of the other. Just make sure you're getting your vital amines (vitamins) from somewhere.

For one, you don't need them. There is literally no evidence that vitamins can benefit you more then a healthy diet can. in fact, look around you, does it look like the medical industry is helping our society at all? It's 2014 and most people are unhealthy. Even people focused on their healthy are unhealthy. It's not your fault. The one thing that is never talked about is the secret behind it all.
Toxins. We eat, breath and drink toxic products all the time. The reason people are so unhealthy is because, their bodies are polluted and most likely they are not doing anything about it.

People love to think and live in a lazy way that is easy for them. People have been brainwashed into relying on pills. I don't know about you but, based on what I see, these pills are not working!

The focus should not be on vitamins and supplements. The focus should be on detoxifying the body and eating properly. Vitamins only add additional stress to our bodies. They are not food. Our bodies should not be focusing on absorbing vitamins, it should be focused on using the "food" that you have consumed.

Most people don't even know what food is. If you eat something that has no nutritional value, it is hardly food in my opinion. What does are body need? Our body needs amino acids and healthy fats. Green veggies are a great source of amino acids and as for healthy fats, ask google for a list to choose from. Anywhere from fish to avocados, there are many foods to choose from.

Instead of using logic, people are wanted to "trust". Our health system is based on the same principal as religion, which is faith. They want us to have faith in their vitamins, supplements, etc - instead of taking the SIMPLE steps needed to live a healthy life.

Instead of thinking vitamins and supplements, start thinking about toxins and parasites. Those are the real concerns in the human body. If you eat a healthy diet, you are taking in all that you need.

One thing I like to do once a week to give my body a break is to "fast". I wake up on Thursday mornings and I go about my day. I might even workout first thing in the morning. I wake up around 7am and I don't have my first meal until 4pm that day. This is an easy way to relieve some stess from your body.

When you are in a fasted state having gone 18+ hours without food, your body focuses on healing itself. When you are sick you have no appetite, why? For the same reason fasting is good for you - your body feeds on the unhealthy cells before anything else when you are in a fasted state.

I could go a week without food - I've done this before. But, if you go too long without food, make sure to be taking in amino acids and healthy fats. I like to make a pineapple/kale smoothie with coconut oil added in.

If anyone comments saying that this is "starving" the body, I will say this. People have gone months without food and survived. Going 20 hours or even a week is not going to hurt you. Everyone that I know who fasts, has seen nothing but positive results.

I live a very healthy lifestyle and it takes very little effort, as it should. Life is easy.

Hope you enjoyed my rant.
I beg to disagree with you. Vitamins form an essential part of our diet and this is especially true to newborns who need the vitamins to boost their immune system and other bodily functions. Most vegetarians rely solely on vegetables and it's a fact that they are just as healthy as most of us.

Wait, what? Did you even read the original post? This thread isn't about doctor-prescribed pills like opiates/opioids, benzodiazepines, or antidepressants. This is about multivitamins that you can get at just about any store.

Back in the sixties the futurist were predicting that we would all be surviving off of tablets by now. World hunger would be a thing of the past, and the number one beverage on Earth would be Tang. I guess they were wrong. At least vitamins are beneficial if taken daily as supplements to a reasonable diet.

It all depends on your body and your situation. Some people have the time and money to prepare a varied and healthy meal. In that case, then you pretty much have all the nurtients you need. Most of the vitamins you take that are unnecessary, you just urinate them out without your body using them. However, if you don't have time to prepare a meal and you're constantly eating fast food, then definitely consider supplemental vitamins to keep yourself healthy.

It seems you have some alternate views to mainstream medicine. I am no expert, but I definitely disagree with you. Vitamin supplements are indistinguishable from the real thing, to your body. Unless you take a tremendous amount of multi-vitamins every day, there's no harm, and only a benefit of getting essentials your body might not get from your food and drink.
I have read that in rat studies, when the animals received 2/3 of their required nutrition, it prolonged their lives. I am guessing it is like when we exercise, the body gets stronger the more stressed it is. I think not eating until 4 P.M. is not a good idea though. I would be sick and dizzy by then. I am guessing you are young. You will change your tune as you age.

I agree with you. The only vitamins I take are the ones that come from plants, meaning I only eat plants. I'll start taking vitamins as soon as I see a vitamin plant out in nature.

This is called the appeal to nature fallacy. Just because something is natural doesn't mean that it is inherently good and just because something is unnatural doesn't mean that it is inherently bad.

We do need vitamins because what we eat daily doesn't have all we need, so I don't think they are garbage, we just need to make a wise selection.

I know a little about what you are talking about, our boddies do need vitamins, but a healthy diet means you are getting them naturally, but some people have difficulties producing them, hence came the idea of vitamin pills..

I agree that most people need a good amount of healthy fats in their diets. Those who take a lot of supplemental vitamins don't absorb most of them anyway because of the lack of fat in their diets. They don't take into consideration that these are fat soluble vitamins and you need fat to absorb them.

I guess it's best that people get a good blood work and figure out their actual deficiencies before taking a cookie cutter multi-vitamin. Use supplementation for a short term period and transition to eating healthy food and getting an active lifestyle.

I agree with you for the most part, but some people do need supplements. There is a serious lack of B12 in most diets now and Vit D is big for many. I could still debate that though, if you're taking care of your diet in a proper way, as you've said. But even the healthiest diets can lack nutrients because our food is so deficient these days. Most people will opt for the typical diet though, so supplements are a must for them. It disgusts me that so many choose an early death for a few minutes on the taste buds, but to each their own. I'm quite happy being the crazy food lady that will outlive them all lol.

Oh and I also agree about the fasting. Our bodies do need time to heal from time to time and everyone LOVES going back to cavemen when it comes to how we treat our bodies. Do they really think they ate as much and as often as we do? lol. If you give the digestive system a break, it can now focus on healing if it's needed.

I'm not convinced that all vitamins are garbage. It's certainly true that many supplements do not contain the nutrients that they claim to, but a good general multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is beneficial to most people.

There is little difference between the more expensive branded supplements and the value brand alternatives. It's always worth comparing labels to check if you can get the same nutrients for less money.

I don't take vitamins anymore, it's been quite a while since I have. It never felt like they were actually helping me in any way so I stopped taking them.

Well, the truth is we should be getting our vitamins from the food we're stuffing in our face. Which seems to be a rare thing these days because we end up eating a lot of garbage because it's easier to eat than home cooked meals. It sucks but it's true.

Sorry I can't read through all the pages to see each individual arguments.
However, I respectfully disagree with OP.
Vitamins are very much needed in our bodies. While it is true that to have a well balanced diet to get the much needed vitamins the natural way is superior to getting them from pills, it is better than nothing when your diet is less than well balanced.

As the matter of fact, most people do not get enough vitamins from their daily diet (some people have terrible eating habits, bad life style, or simply too poor to buy the necessary food for a well balanced diet). In such cases, vitamin supplements can bring some benefits as a cheaper mean.

On a side note, a while ago I have read an article saying that most people who take vitamin pills are not the ones need them. Simply put, those people who care about their health the most are actually taking the best of themselves (and also having better off financial situation as well as education). Those people who actually need the supplements are not the ones taking them...either too poor, not educated enough about a healthy life style, or simply not paying attention to health at all.

Like I said, it is better to get your vitamins from the food, but when your food isn't supply enough vitamins for whatever reasons, you need the supplements.
One example is if you live in a less than sunny area while spending most of your time indoor due to work and other reasons, you will need vitamin D supplement. Of course it is better just to get it by expose your skin to sunlight, but if the circumstances do not allow it, then go to the backup plan = pills.

I don't think that vitamins are garbage. There are just garbage brands out there. You should get your nutrients from foods. That is for sure! Eat right then you won't need any pills.
